The short subject categories are hard to gauge in most years. When it comes to Best Animated Short, it’s never a bad idea to bet on those shorts that appear before Pixar features.
However, this year’s Pixar entry, Sanjay’s Super Team, faces some stiff competition.
Acclaimed animator Don Hertzfeldt has an entry in the top five that could give Pixar a run for its money. World of Tomorrow is a mesmerizing time travel adventure using simple animation. Sometimes, less is more.
The category also has Prologue, a film that creator Richard Williams claims took him nearly his whole life to make. A film conceived at the age of 15, the creator thought he might never have the artistic capabilities to make a finished product. Decades and three Oscars later and, lo and behold, such a product exists.
Update: I have recently reviewed all five of the animated short nominees. You can read the review here and get a better idea of how the race is shaping up.
