The weekend of 4/29/2016 sees three new wide releases: Keanu, Mother’s Day, and Ratchet & Clank. The first is the big screen debut of Key & Peele stars Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele as leads. The second is the next film in the Garry Marshall-verse. And the third is a video game adaptation. Let’s get into it.
Mother’s Day has the widest release of the three (3,035 according to Box Office Mojo), but Marshall’s box office record is rocky. Not to mention that the current box office leader The Jungle Book is still going strong in 4,000+ theaters. The Jungle Book is primed to have a strong third weekend, possibly racking in $40 million.
Keanu is interesting. I think it could have a strong opening weekend, but this could be because I personally am excited to see it. Ratchet & Clank is probably going to go the way of most video game films.
The other films in theaters are likely to fall off the top five this weekend, save for perhaps The Huntsman, even with its poor reception.
Box Office: Weekend of 4/28
- The Jungle Book – $37 million
- Mother’s Day – $22 million
- Keanu – $19 million
- Ratchet & Clank – $11 million
- The Huntsman – $9 million
As always, thanks for reading!
