As May comes to a close, we are well into the Summer movie season. However, aside from one particularly high profile release, we haven’t seen many large box office films raise to the surface. The Angry Birds Movie won the weekend last weekend, nudging out Civil War by about $5 million, but it was by no means a huge Summer release.
This weekend could launch the 2016 Summer season with the competing releases of X-Men: Apocalypse and Alice Through the Looking Glass. But both sequels could also prove to be duds, given their quality. Early reviews on both films prove tepid. Perhaps the reign of the sequel is finally coming to a close…but probably not. Either way, look for disappointing numbers from both films, even if one of them grabs the number one spot. This said, the long weekend will bolster the numbers a bit.
Box Office: Weekend of 5/27
- X-Men: Apocalypse – $85 million
- Alice Through the Looking Glass – $55 million
- The Angry Birds Movie – $20 million
- Captain America: Civil War – $16 million
- Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising – $9 million
