2016 yielded a flat dichotomy of animated features. There was the good and there was the bad, which makes my job a lot easier here. Four out of five of the Best Animated Feature slots are no brainers. The fifth slot is where the interesting conversation lies.
Best Animated Feature
- Finding Dory
- Kubo and the Two Strings
- Moana
- The Red Turtle
- Zootopia
Will Win: Zootopia
This category is very cut-and-dry. Zootopia is the clear favorite, but if the Academy feels like honoring a more slept on film it will go with Kubo and the Two Strings. Moana is a solid third place, and Finding Dory rounds out as a dark horse.
And then there is The Red Turtle. Or My Life as a Zucchini. Or The Little Prince. But not Sausage Party (sorry internet). Who knows. None of these films will win if they do get nominated. My Life as a Zucchini has the Golden Globe nomination to its name now, but I have a feeling that will not translate to an Oscar nod.
As always, thanks for reading!

Any prediction list which neglects to even mention Your Name must not have seen this marvellous movie. I recommend paying close attention to the Annie Award nominations; they have MLAAZ, TRT, and YN all up for Best Directing, and the first two of those also for Best Writing, while Moana and FD are MIA from both categories…
