2016 yielded a flat dichotomy of animated features. There was the good and there was the bad, which makes my job a lot easier here. Four out of five of the Best Animated Feature slots are no brainers. The fifth slot is where the interesting conversation lies.
Best Animated Feature
- Finding Dory
- Kubo and the Two Strings
- Moana
- The Red Turtle
- Zootopia
Will Win: Zootopia
This category is very cut-and-dry. Zootopia is the clear favorite, but if the Academy feels like honoring a more slept on film it will go with Kubo and the Two Strings. Moana is a solid third place, and Finding Dory rounds out as a dark horse.
And then there is The Red Turtle. Or My Life as a Zucchini. Or The Little Prince. But not Sausage Party (sorry internet). Who knows. None of these films will win if they do get nominated. My Life as a Zucchini has the Golden Globe nomination to its name now, but I have a feeling that will not translate to an Oscar nod.
As always, thanks for reading!
