After watching hours upon hours of backlogged RedLetterMedia videos over the holiday, I am well aware of the fatigued nature by which Hollywood shoves pre-sold intellectual properties down our throats year in and year out so folks can cash in on an easy payday. With this in mind, it is nice to look at the refreshingly new and original ideas that Hollywood has put out in 2016. Let’s talk Best Original Screenplay nominations.
Best Original Screenplay
Will Win: Manchester by the Sea or La La Land
Manchester by the Sea and La La Land are emerging in this category as the clear favorites given their bids for Best Picture and tie win for the Critics’ Choice Best Screenplay award. Expect to see them in the mix no matter what.
The other three films could be switched out for others. Captain Fantastic in particular is a dark horse candidate, but I think its story is novel enough to warrant attention. Then there is the incredibly offbeat Yorgos Lanthimos film The Lobster, which could sneak in. It also received a Critics’ Choice nomination.
As always, thanks for reading!
