All roads have been cleared for Transformers: The Last Knight this weekend. The only new wide release film domestically, The Last Knight will open in 3,900 screens.
This doesn’t mean that other films aren’t around to put up competition, but will any of them be able to topple the box office behemoth that is Transformers?
Box Office Predictions: Weekend of 6/23
- Transformers: The Last Knight – $88 million
- Cars 3 – $30 million
- Wonder Woman – $26.5
- All Eyez on Me – $13 million
- The Mummy – $6.5 million
No. Transformers is opening at a strategic high point. Wonder Woman is gradually being taken out of theaters moving into its fourth weekend, and Cars 3 under-performed in its opening last weekend.
The other films in competition were given releases last weekend as a last ditch effort to pull in a profit in a relatively slow Summer slot. All Eyez on Me, which pulled in the third spot last weekend, and 47 Meters Down both had healthy openings. But they are absolutely no match for Michael Bay, Pixar, and DC.
Transformers: Age of Extinction earned a total gross of $245 million after an opening weekend of $100 million. That is to say, the second highest opening weekend for a film that is the lowest grossing in the franchise.
The Last Knight has the smallest release of the franchise, and Transformers fatigue may final be wearing into even the most mainstream of audiences. Most likely, the film will pale in comparison domestically in comparison to Revenge of the Fallen.
Whether Transformers: The Last Knight will do comparable business to its predecessors at the domestic box office will ultimately make no difference. The film will make enough money overseas to guarantee three or four more sequels if the studio wishes them.
