I like the Golden Globes Best Supporting Actress race. It is full of talent. It is full of competition. And there is no clear winner, per se. That said, let’s get to predicting!
Best Supporting Actress
- Viola Davis – Fences
- Naomie Harris – Moonlight
- Nicole Kidman – Lion
- Octavia Spencer – Hidden Figures
- Michelle Williams – Manchester by the Sea
Will Win: Viola Davis
Could Win: Naomie Harris
Dark Horse: Michelle Williams
Here’s the deal. Fences ain’t out yet. As of today, I have not seen the film (I will update this article accordingly once I have, mind you). But that trailer, it’s gotten to me. Davis is heartbreaking and electrifying in those two minutes of montage. Her reputation as an actress precedes her, and I think she has a good shot at this award and an Oscar campaign.
This said, Harris was phenomenal as the mother figure in Moonlight. However, her role is limited. I don’t think that will stop the HFPA; if they go for Mahershala Ali, they may go for Harris as well. Williams is part of a great ensemble in Manchester, but I think her role is minuscule. She is an unlikely choice, but it’s possible.
The jury’s still out on Hidden Figures and Lion, but neither film feels like a heavy hitter this award season.
As always, thanks for reading!
