Weekend Box Office Predictions: 5/5 – 5/7

One large new release will be looking to dominate the domestic box office to kick off May.

Marvel Studios has made it somewhat of a tradition to kickstart the Summer season on the first weekend of May, and 2017 is no different. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will look to capitalize on the surprising success of the 2014 original. But it will also be going up against the international phenomenom that is The Fate of the Furious.

Box Office Predictions: Weekend of 5/5

  1. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – $125 million
  2. The Fate of the Furious – $11 million
  3. How to be a Latin Lover – $7 million
  4. Baahubali 2: The Conclusion – $5.5 million
  5. Boss Baby – $4.5 million

Guardians will handily take the number one spot this weekend. The Fate of the Furious will continue its successful run, but it can’t hold a candle to Marvel three weeks into its release.

With no other newcomers, last week’s winners will likely fall into place behind Guardians. Latin Lover and Baahubali 2 will drop around 50% in their second week. And Boss Baby will continue to exercise its long tail.

The real question is how high Guardians 2 will go. Box Office Mojo has its debut projections at an impressive $158 million, but that seems unrealistic. $125 million might be low in comparison, but I think these Marvel sequels are over-estimated in terms of profit tracking.
