Weekend Box Office Predictions: 5/5 – 5/7

One large new release will be looking to dominate the domestic box office to kick off May.

Marvel Studios has made it somewhat of a tradition to kickstart the Summer season on the first weekend of May, and 2017 is no different. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will look to capitalize on the surprising success of the 2014 original. But it will also be going up against the international phenomenom that is The Fate of the Furious.

Additionally, Bollywood sequel Baahubali 2: The Conclusion will be looking to make a similar smash to its predecessor. Weekend Box Office Predictions: 4/14 – 4/16

Mid-April is not heavy with high profile releases. Next weekend sees the saturation of four wide releases, including Disney’s nature doc Born in China, A24’s action comedy Free Fire, and the Rosario Dawson-starring thriller Unforgettable.

This weekend, however, we see only one major release, and it could be a doozy. The Fate of the Furious. Furious 7, the franchise’s previous installment, made over a billion dollars worldwide and an opening weekend gross of $147 million domestic.

Will The Fate of the Furious live up to those numbers?

All of The Fast and the Furious Films Ranked

The The Fast and the Furious franchise is one of the strangest Hollywood franchises around. Its “revival” after four films has resulted in higher budgets, higher grosses, better critical acclaim, and Vin Diesel making increasingly bold claims about the films.

With this discrepancy between old and new, with the franchise more popular now than ever, it seems fitting to inspect the franchise synoptically and rank them accordingly.

And yes this includes the upcoming The Fate of the Furious.

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006) Movie Review

In anticipation of April’s release of The Fate of the Furious, the eighth installment in the The Fast and the Furious franchise, CineFiles is taking a retrospective look back on all of the series’ films. In this edition, we look at the third entry into the series (but the sixth film chronologically?), The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift is widely considered the black sheep of the now incredibly successful Fast & Furious franchise. This is due mainly to the film’s tangential narrative from what has essentially become a testosterone-infused soap opera.

But let’s not judge a book by its preconceived notions.

Tokyo Drift opens on a car race over the ownership of a woman. So…it’s not looking good so far. Unlike the previous two Fast & Furious films, however, this opening race Continue reading The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006) Movie Review

2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) Movie Review

In anticipation of the April release of The Fate of the Furious, CineFiles is taking a retrospective look back on the franchise as a whole. In this installment, we look at the second film in the series, 2 Fast 2 Furious.

2 Fast 2 Furious begins by essentially recreating the opening race of its predecessor. The only difference is that the intrigue of two dual protagonists facing off is replaced by the correct assumption that Brian (Paul Walker), the now ex-LAPD street racer, is going to win. The scene is also shot with more intensity, even if some shots are directly lifted from the first film.

Following this race, Brian is brought in by Miami police and roped into an undercover operation against Carter Verone (Cole Hauser), an importer-exporter cartel connection. Brian enlists the aide of childhood friend Roman Pierce (Tyrese Gibson) to infiltrate Verone’s inner circle.

There is a noticeable Continue reading 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) Movie Review

The Fast and the Furious (2001) Movie Review

As a precursor to the April 14 release of The Fate of the Furious, the eighth film in the Fast & Furious franchise, CineFiles is taking a look back at the 16 years of Fast films, starting here with 2001’s The Fast and the Furious.

What can be said about a film centering around underground drag racing, in which characters risk their lives for the respect of the win? Hopefully a lot given that film spawned a billion dollar franchise.
