A Very Loose Review of Spider-Man: No Way Home (and every other 2021 Marvel movie)

Warning: this review hints at major spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

I haven’t posted on this site since October 15, almost two months to the day that I’m writing this. But I’m going to pretend like that’s not the case, and that I’m a normal film critic and not a graduate student with a job who has realized that it is hard to find time to balance one’s responsibilities with film critic hobbyism.

Anyway…how about that Marvel Studios, huh? Bouncing back from a rough year at the theatrical box office, Disney’s theatrical cash cow had four movies in the can for 2021. Following a glorious financial success with Avengers: Endgame, the studio needed a firm reset of its film properties (its streaming series properties have done their own legwork in moving the IP forward).

Which is what made Black Widow such a strange property. Arguably Continue reading A Very Loose Review of Spider-Man: No Way Home (and every other 2021 Marvel movie)

Captain Marvel (2019) Movie Review

Note: If you consider a plot synopsis of the first act of a movie a spoiler, then spoiler warning for this review. That is all.

The Ending of Avengers: Infinity War Kind of Ruins itself

Note: As you can see with the title of this article, this discussion of Avengers: Infinity War contains massive spoilers about the ending of the film. So don’t read this if you haven’t seen the film and want to see it spoiler-free.

All right. I even put a picture in-between the spoiler warning and the spoilers. Just in case. So now you can’t say I didn’t warn you. Continue reading The Ending of Avengers: Infinity War Kind of Ruins itself

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) Movie Review

On a planetary system called The Sovereign, the Guardians of the Galaxy defend some golden batteries from a large squid monster. Upon success of this task, the golden inhabitants of the planet that houses these golden batteries pay the Guardians. They then chase them down violently when it becomes evident that one member of this indelible crew, Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper), stole some of these batteries for his own gain.

Weekend Box Office Predictions: 5/5 – 5/7

One large new release will be looking to dominate the domestic box office to kick off May.

Marvel Studios has made it somewhat of a tradition to kickstart the Summer season on the first weekend of May, and 2017 is no different. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will look to capitalize on the surprising success of the 2014 original. But it will also be going up against the international phenomenom that is The Fate of the Furious.

Box Office Predictions: Weekend of 5/5

Doctor Strange (2016) Movie Review

Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), a cocksure neurosurgeon with the mind of a savant, becomes victim to a (rather excessive) car wreck. His hands smashed through the windshield and succumbing to massive nerve damage, he may never practice surgery again. Wonderful parallel shots show his fall from grace in a shot structure that seems almost too elegant for a Marvel film.

Captain America: Civil War (2016) Movie Review

The premise of Captain America: Civil War is exactly what it sounds like: a legislation called the Sokovia Accords will put restrictions on the power of superheroes, and it threatens to tear the Avengers in two. Divided, faction leaders Cap (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) face off in a heated battle for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
