Last weekend, the fifth installment in the Michael Bay Transformers franchise, The Last Knight, drastically under-performed. Coming in at $44.6 million, the film has received the lowest grossing opening weekend in the franchise.
With that knowledge, the introductory weekend to July will prove interesting at the box office. Transformers will likely see a significant drop, and three other wide releases look to take its place at number one.
Box Office Predictions: Weekend of 6/30
- Despicable Me 3 – $73 million
- Transformers: The Last Knight – $28 million
- Baby Driver – $22 million
- Wonder Woman – $18 million
- The House – $15 million
Universal’s Despicable Me franchise has done great work in the Summer box office. Despicable Me and Minions both exceeded $300 million domestically, and Minions opened at over $110 million in its opening weekend.
Despicable Me 3 might not do quite that well, but it will certainly take the number one spot.
The other new releases this weekend are Sony’s Baby Driver and New Line’s The House. Both open in similar sized markets, but Baby Driver‘s marketing campaign and strong early reviews could push it over its competitor.
Hanging on in the top five this weekend will be Wonder Woman. The DC film will prove to be one of the highest grossing film of Summer 2017.
