2019 Summer Movie Wager – Box Office Predictions

After intense debating on the /Filmcast, it was decided that Avengers: Endgame is to be included in the annual Summer Movie Wager, a game of box office predictions, in spite of Endgame not technically being released within the Summer movie season (which is arbitrarily defined on Box Office Mojo as the first weekend of May through Labor Day weekend).

That said, the number one spot in the competition is all-but sealed up. Endgame is set to, at the very least, match Infinity War in sales. So barring some failure in storytelling that tanks the word of mouth on the film, it will take the top line.

For those unfamiliar with the Summer Movie Wager, it is a competition in which players pick the top 10 highest grossing films of the Summer season, plus three “dark horse” predictions. Here are the official scoring rules, as per the /Filmcast: Continue reading 2019 Summer Movie Wager – Box Office Predictions

2018 Summer Box Office Predictions

Every year, I like playing a little game of Summer box office predictions. The rules are simple (and the game is played officially at Trivia Club and /Film, if you’re interested): Pick which 10 films, and three dark horse candidates, that you think will gross the most money domestically during the Summer movie season.

This year, the game’s outlets are shifting their definition of what the Summer movie season is in order to include Avengers: Infinity War. Avengers was initially slated for release on the first weekend of May, but Disney pushed its release up a week.

For the sake of this article, I’m just going to keep the traditional definition of Summer movie season, which is the first weekend of May to Labor Day weekend. It kind of makes the predicting harder, given that Avengers is almost certainly going to be the highest grossing movie of the year, and if the film were included in this competition it would be number one with a bullet.

All the same, this year’s crop of Summer movies is pretty strange from a box office standpoint.

Weekend Box Office Predictions: August 11 – 13

Last weekend was the slowest of the Summer, financially. The Dark Tower topped the list with an under-performing $19 million. Can it hold on to its crown with three new movies on the horizon: Annabelle: Creation, The Nut Job 2, and The Glass Castle?

Weekend Box Office Predictions: June 30 – July 2

Last weekend, the fifth installment in the Michael Bay Transformers franchise, The Last Knight, drastically under-performed. Coming in at $44.6 million, the film has received the lowest grossing opening weekend in the franchise.

With that knowledge, the introductory weekend to July will prove interesting at the box office. Transformers will likely see a significant drop, and three other wide releases look to take its place at number one.

Weekend Box Office Predictions: 3/24-3/26

Last weekend saw the record-breaking opening of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, which raked in a phenomenal $174 million. The film broke the record for best March opening weekend and the best opening for a PG-rated film, beating out last year’s Finding Dory by almost $40 million.

Beast‘s lack of competition guaranteed it this large opening. This weekend, we see the release of four wide release films, according to Box Office Mojo. The biggest of these four is Saban and Lionsgate’s Power Rangers, which has received a sizable marketing campaign to rival Disney’s.

Other releases include the sports pic Slamma Jamma, the comedy ChiPs, and the space thriller Life, all three of which are opening in less theaters than Power Rangers and Beauty and the Beast.

With the large quantity of competition, how far will Beauty and the Beast drop?

Weekend Box Office Predictions: 3/17-3/19

This weekend sees the release of yet another Disney juggernaut, Beauty and the Beast. Next to that is a much smaller new release in Blumhouse Tilt’s The Belko Experiment.

Vying for attention outside of the new kids on the block are a number of healthy box office contenders. Kong: Skull Island and Logan are two big box office draws still looking good in their second and third weekends. And Get Out remains strong as the genre engine that could.

How will the two newcomers fare in this market? Well…let’s just plop of photo here to break up the text before we get to the answer to that question…

Oscar weekend sees the wide release of three new films. Two of these three, as far as I am concerned, have received zero marketing. These would be the films Rock Dog (um…) and Collide (…what?). The third film, also the widest new release of the weekend, is Jordan Peele’s much anticipated and well-reviewed Get Out. The horror film stars Daniel Kaluuya and Allison Williams and is likely to make a splash this weekend.

Returning to the fight are LEGO Batman, Fifty Shades Darker, and The Great Wall. The LEGO Batman Movie, having won the box office in its first two weekends, is likely to remain somewhere in the top three, although anything could happen.

Weekend Box Office Predictions: 6/10 – 6/12

This weekend sees three new wide release films to counter last week’s three wide release films that had varying degrees of success. Warcraft, The Conjuring 2, and Now You See Me 2 all look to duke it out for top five spots against the onslaught of Summer films that hang on from week to week.
