Scores are the under-appreciated backbone of tone in cinema. Composers control the emotional arcs of scenes. They reinforce important motifs. Music makes some films feel more full. A composer has to know what is at the heart of any script in order to properly do his/her job. The composers on these films understand this process. Let’s take a look at the nominees for Best Original Score.
Best Original Score
- Arrival – Johann Johannsson
- Hidden Figures – Hans Zimmer, Pharrell Williams, Benjamin Wallfisch
- La La Land – Justin Hurwitz
- Lion – Dustin O’Halloran, Volker Bertelmann
- Moonlight – Nicholas Britell
Will Win: La La Land
Could Win: Arrival
Dark Horse: Moonlight
La La Land is a film about music. Therefore, it makes sense that it would be the frontrunner for this award. Still, Johann Johannsson gave an ambiance to Arrival that is pivotal to that film’s success. Without it, the film would feel terribly empty. Johannsson’s history of award nominations could give him an edge here, but I still think it is La La Land‘s award to lose.
As always, thanks for reading!
