The Academy has narrowed down the Best Makeup & Hairstyling category to a shortlist of seven films: Deadpool; The Dressmaker; Hail, Caesar!; Florence Foster Jenkins; A Man Called Ove, Star Trek Beyond, and Suicide Squad. This makes our job a bit easier, buy by no means is there a definitive frontrunner here.

• Star Trek Beyond

 

If you look at the Academy Awards as a place for Hollywood to showcase its highest prestige films, than you would not think of films like Star Trek Beyond and Deadpool would get nominations in a Best Makeup category. While Florence Foster Jenkins is the likely winner in this category, the Academy is not going to be afraid to play up its commercial properties that transcended with good critical reception.

It’s not as if Star Trek Beyond and Deadpool have the best makeup work in history, but the Deadpool character design is nothing to bat an eyelash at. Not to mention that, more than likely, more Academy members have seen Deadpool than The Dressmaker.
