Anyway, let’s talk predictions.
The Nominees – Best Supporting Actor
-
Armie Hammer – Call Me by Your Name
-
Richard Jenkins – The Shape of Water
-
Willem Dafoe – The Florida Project
-
Christopher Plummer – All the Money in the World
-
Sam Rockwell – Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Will Win: Willem Dafoe
Could Win: Sam Rockwell
Dark Horse: Armie Hammer
The strongest dark horse candidate of 2018 is Armie Hammer in Call Me by Your Name. The favorite in Best Supporting Actor remains Willem Dafoe, but the Oscar conversation could easily shift to Hammer with an upset here. It is an entirely possible scenario.
Sam Rockwell has garnered much praise for his turn in Three Billboards, a film whose greatest strength is its acting. For being a movie that boasts the phenomenal performance of Frances McDormand, it is telling that Rockwell is still receiving attention.
The Florida Project has been somewhat forgotten in the award season conversation. It would be a shame if it was forgotten to the point where Dafoe is left with nothing to show for it. He faces stiff competition, though, so we’ll have to wait and see.
As always, thanks for reading!
