2016 Academy Awards Predictions – Best Sound Editing

The two sound categories at the Oscars may appear synonymous. And, yes, the two categories often go to the same film. I think this year will end up going that route, as well. But, of course, anything is possible.

All five of the films in Best Sound Editing feature superior sound work. As a result, I feel that the award will go to the film whose sound editing heightens the mood of the experience.

Long story short, it is a battle between Star Wars and Mad Max. What Mad Max has going for it is time. The early summer critical smash has had time to settle down, and people still are in love with it. On the other side of the coin, The Force Awakens has only been sitting in theaters for a month. Given its staying power, I think Mad Max will take this one.

There is also a chance for The Revenant. Its sound editing is rhythmic, but it may be too quiet of a piece in that film to move it to the top of the category.

Nominees:

Will Win: Mad Max: Fury Road

Could Win: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Dark Horse: The Revenant

As always, thanks for reading!
