With the two sound categories—Sound Mixing and Sound Editing—holding the same five nominees, it is tempting to give the win for both awards to the same film. While usually I would warn against this notion, this year the possibility for that happening is certainly there.
Best Sound Mixing:
The Nominees:
Will Win: Baby Driver
Could Win: Dunkirk
Dark Horse: Blade Runner 2049
Best Sound Editing:
The Nominees:
- Baby Driver
- Blade Runner 2049
- Dunkirk
- Star Wars: The Last Jedi
- The Shape of Water
Will Win: Dunkirk
Could Win: Baby Driver
Dark Horse: Blade Runner 2049
Both of these categories could fall the way of Dunkirk. The soundscape of that movie sells the world and is the most immersive element. The success of the film hinges on its sound design.
Where Dunkirk could fall is in the Sound Mixing category, simply because the mix of Baby Driver is, in many scenes, a seamless integration of music, action sound effects, and dialogue. If nothing else, Baby Driver should win for Sound Mixing.
The other major contender here is Blade Runner 2049, which has a very prominent soundtrack. Where I would count out Star Wars and The Shape of Water—one for being too over-stated and the other for being too understated—I would not dismiss Blade Runner 2049 outright. It may be unlikely, but the film could come up and sweep both categories.
As always, thanks for reading!
