2019 Oscar Predictions – Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing

What is often the operative question with the two sound categories is whether or not they will go to the same film. More often than not, if a film stands out for either editing or mixing, it also stands out in the other.

This year, I think there is a case to be made for both the split and the sweep.

2019 Oscar Nominations Predictions – Best Sound Editing/Mixing

There is always some overlap between the two sound categories. Sound Editing is the creation of foley. Sound Mixing is the recording and mixing of the soundtrack. They are two distinct aspects of sound production, but often if a film does one well it does the other similarly well.

That said, a well-mixed film may not require a lot of sound effect production. A musical, perhaps. A film may require a heavy amount of foley, which usually means the mix is harder to master. An action movie, perhaps. A lot goes into the soundtrack, making it hard sometimes to discern whether the Academy will honor films in both categories, one, or none.

2018 Academy Awards Predictions – Best Sound (Editing and Mixing)

With the two sound categories—Sound Mixing and Sound Editing—holding the same five nominees, it is tempting to give the win for both awards to the same film. While usually I would warn against this notion, this year the possibility for that happening is certainly there.

2018 Academy Awards Predictions – Best Sound Nominees

Sound Design can be an overlooked aspect of filmmaking, just as the Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing Oscar categories can be overlooked awards. Nevertheless, sound design is important, and nabbing the right films in the sound categories can be a key part of winning an Oscar pool.

Before putting that cart before the horse, though, let’s focus on the films that could get nominated.

Academy Awards Predictions 2017 – Best Sound Mixing & Best Sound Editing

The Academy Award sound categories are always very interesting. Where many of the other Oscar categories share many films, Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Design allow for other films to get some Oscar love.

This year is no different (although, the major films are still more likely to win).

2017 Academy Awards Nomination Predictions – Best Sound Editing/Sound Mixing

The sound design Academy Awards. Oft overlooked and conflated, the sound editing and mixing are pivotal aspects of a film. A good soundtrack mix is seamless and unnoticeable, which is why the Academy likes to reward films with many sound elements that must be mixed. A good sound edit may also involve many sound effects on the soundtrack, or it may be something more subtle.

Here are my picks for Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.

2016 Academy Awards Predictions – Best Sound Mixing

Best Sound Mixing will fall the same way of Best Sound Editing in 2016. This knocks Bridge of Spies out of the running, I’m afraid. The remaining four are a mixed bag, and each one has its shot.

There is a stereotype that the biggest, loudest movie of the year is the shoe-in for the two sound categories. This isn’t always the case. But this year it might be.

The competition, I feel, is between  Continue reading 2016 Academy Awards Predictions – Best Sound Mixing
