Weekend Box Office Predictions: June 16 – June 18

Mid-June 2017 sees the release of four new wide release films at the domestic box office, all in various genres. The Tupac biopic All Eyez on Me, releasing in 2,400 theaters, will look to bank off of the success of 2015’s similar Straight Outta Compton. Shark thriller 47 Meters Down—3,500 theaters—will look to bank off of the minor success of last year’s The Shallows.

Then there is Disney-Pixar’s Summer effort Cars 3. The first sequel in the series made about $50 million less than the original, which itself is only the 10th highest grossing film in the Pixar family.

Along with these new films, potential flops like The Mummy and runaway successes like Wonder Woman continue their box office runs this weekend.

With all of these films competing, let’s try to maneuver a box office top five for this weekend. Shall we?

Weekend Box Office Predictions: June 2 – June 4

The first weekend of June is looking to be a smash at the domestic box office. A strong opening for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales could translate into an equally strong second week. The impressive run of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is looking to continue into June.

And then there’s this little movie. This DC Studios film by the name of Wonder Woman.

The Films of the Alien Franchise Ranked

With Alien: Covenant on the horizon, we take a look back at the Alien franchise as a whole.  Which means, we make unnecessary and often unfair comparisons between films with vastly different creative teams at the helm.

There are eight films that feature the H.R. Giger xenomorph alien, and we are going to rank them all. Yes, including Alien: Covenant.

Weekend Box Office Predictions: 4/19 – 4/21

In 2012, Prometheus became the highest grossing Alien movie (not adjusted for inflation). Weirdly enough, it wasn’t really an Alien movie at all.

But the numbers make sense, given the film was Ridley Scott’s return to the beloved franchise that he created. Alien: Covenant, releasing this Friday, is Scott’s return to a real Alien film. Will it take number one this weekend? Do I like to use leading questions as a means of getting people on my homepage to click through to the full article?

Yes. The answer…the answer’s yes.

Alien: Covenant (2017) Movie Review

Alien was set against the backdrop of corporate struggles between white collar and blue collar. Aliens: on the backdrop of ragtag soldiers not understanding the gravity of their situation; an extended metaphor for Vietnam, if you will. Alien 3, although flawed for it, is about religious persecution by way of prison purgatory.

Alien: Covenant? It is set on the backdrop of ironic lost love. Thanks, Hollywood.

Summer 2017 Movie Preview: May

May kicks off the Summer movie season: One of the best…no that’s not right…one of the most underwhelming periods in the Hollywood calendar.

Alright, that’s not entirely fair. But there have been some clunky Summers in recent years when it comes to U.S. theatrical releases. Every year there are films that are on the schedule that look great on paper (Jurassic World), or at least acceptable on paper (Independence Day: Resurgence), and then turn out to be major disappointments. (Yes, I realize Jurassic World was by no means a major disappointment in terms of money or general audience response. But mark my words that that film will not hold up over time).

And sure, there can be May surprises (Mad Max: Fury Road, a second example), but Summer is generally Continue reading Summer 2017 Movie Preview: May

Most Anticipated Films of 2017

Happy New Year beautiful readers! With the New Year upon us, it is time to take a look forward at 2017 in the theaters. As happens every January, we are looking ahead hopeful at the high profile films that are coming out. And once we get through the wasteland that is January (I’m looking at you, The Bye Bye Man) our starry eyes will be glazed over with a lack of faith in the Hollywood system.

So before that happens, let’s take a look at the most highly anticipated films of 2017. Note: I know what you’re thinking. You think this list will be playing into the hands and pockets of Hollywood given the sequels, reboots, and huge budget tentpoles that will inevitably be on this list. Which is why I am splitting this list in half. This list will look at the bigger budget releases, and a separate article will look at the potentially smaller (certainly not sequel) films of 2017.

Additionally, this list is not ranked. Instead, it is organized by what the scheduled release dates for the films are.
