Thor: Ragnarok (2017) Movie Review

Thor: Ragnarok is a messy film. It’s main villain Hela (played with scenery-chewing glee by Cate Blanchett) is side-lined for most of the film. As is Asgard, the place that is in mortal danger from the Goddess of Death that is Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) sister.

Do not be fooled. This is the main conflict of the film’s plot. But, for the most part, Thor and pals are relegated to another world entirely.

Thor and his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) are left stranded on this planet, Sakaar, but they are stranded in Continue reading Thor: Ragnarok (2017) Movie Review

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) Movie Review

2002. B-Movie horror crowd-pleaser Sam Raimi brings the iconic friendly neighborhood Spider-Man to the big screen.

2012. Following two Raimi Spider-Man sequels—one to great acclaim and one ill-fated—Sony revamps their comic book property with Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man.

2015. It becomes public knowledge that Sony and Marvel Studios reached an agreement to bring the red spandex, arachnid-based superhero into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Spider-Man: Homecoming

captain-america-civil-war-movie-review-2016

Do we need another Spider-Man movie? He was my favorite comic book character as a child. Then I grew older and cynical and found out about Watchman and The Killing Joke. Either way, my inner child is sick of Continue reading Summer 2017 Movie Release Preview: July

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) Movie Review

On a planetary system called The Sovereign, the Guardians of the Galaxy defend some golden batteries from a large squid monster. Upon success of this task, the golden inhabitants of the planet that houses these golden batteries pay the Guardians. They then chase them down violently when it becomes evident that one member of this indelible crew, Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper), stole some of these batteries for his own gain.

Trailer Rundown: Thor: Ragnarok

These days, it is hard to get one’s cynical blood pumping over a superhero movie.

I’m still not getting my hopes up. But…

Trailer Rundown: It, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Valerian

Reboots. Sequels. Reboots of reboots that had sequels.

Then there’s Valerian and the City of Long Movie Titles. Oh, that’s a comic book adaptation? At least it looks pretty.

Luc Besson (“legendary director,” according to some marketing campaigns) has a new film coming out this year. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (do the 1,000 planets have cities? do those cities have planets inside of them? we may never know).

Besson is best known for a great crime film, The Professional, and a slightly over-rated, imaginative science fiction cult hit The Fifth Element. He also made Lucy, but let’s not talk about it.

Valerian looks like a spiritual sequel to The Fifth Element. The new trailer for the film, admittedly, looks quite beautiful on a computer generated level.

There is also no reason to believe that the film will hold up in Continue reading Trailer Rundown: It, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Valerian

Most Anticipated Films of 2017

Happy New Year beautiful readers! With the New Year upon us, it is time to take a look forward at 2017 in the theaters. As happens every January, we are looking ahead hopeful at the high profile films that are coming out. And once we get through the wasteland that is January (I’m looking at you, The Bye Bye Man) our starry eyes will be glazed over with a lack of faith in the Hollywood system.

So before that happens, let’s take a look at the most highly anticipated films of 2017. Note: I know what you’re thinking. You think this list will be playing into the hands and pockets of Hollywood given the sequels, reboots, and huge budget tentpoles that will inevitably be on this list. Which is why I am splitting this list in half. This list will look at the bigger budget releases, and a separate article will look at the potentially smaller (certainly not sequel) films of 2017.

Additionally, this list is not ranked. Instead, it is organized by what the scheduled release dates for the films are.
