Surprising Snubs from the 2017 Golden Globe Nominations

The Golden Globes were released today, one day after the yet-to-be-nationally-released (read: I haven’t seen it) La La Land won big at the Critics’ Choice Awards, and, as usual, some had to get snubbed.

Here are a brief list of no-shows from this year’s list of film nominees (Sorry, no TV here). Note: I have not seen all of the film’s nominated (and not nominated), so some of these list items might not be so surprising in retrospect. 2017 Oscar Movie Season Preview

The first weekend of September 2016 has brought us two major disappointments (The Disappointments Room and When the Bough Breaks) and one movie with some early Oscar buzz. Clint Eastwood’s biopic Sully is earning attention, particularly for Tom Hanks’ usual strong performance. With Summer behind us and the mediocre lot of September ahead, I feel the need to look a few months down the line at some movies that promise to be some of the best of the year.

Sully is literally marred by explosions. They are the nightmares of the title character—pilot Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger (Tom Hanks), who successfully landed a crashing plane into the Hudson River in 2009—a streaking jet plane striking into Times Square. These are the volatile internal demons of an outwardly calm man.

Bridge of Spies (2015) Movie Review

 

Bridge of Spies is a Cold War espionage drama from Steven Spielberg. The FBI infiltrates a hotel room held by a man they address as Colonel. Calmly, the man, Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance), continues about his business as the FBI agents strip his room looking for signs of espionage. All the while, the man destroys the signs of espionage.
