The Little Things (2021) Movie Review

The Little Things, which is currently available to HBO Max subscribers on Warners’ streaming service, takes place in 1990. It was also first written in the 1990s (registered with the WGA in 1993, apparently). And this comes as no surprise, given its bold adherence to the tropes of the procedural crime genre that ballooned in the 1990s after the massive success of The Silence of the Lambs.

Se7en is the film The Little Things is being compared to the most vocally (writer-director John Lee Hancock is quick to point out Continue reading The Little Things (2021) Movie Review

The Equalizer 2 (2018) Movie Review

There is something inexplicable about The Equalizer 2. For one, and perhaps most importantly, it is the first sequel that legendary actor Denzel Washington has chosen to take part in. Why this particular project struck his fancy is hard to say. He seems to enjoy the wise man action hero personality. He has a history of collaboration with the film’s director, Antione Fuqua.

But the script for The Equalizer 2 couldn’t be called impressive. It structures a feature length film. But the plot slides away from the brain like bland scrambled eggs off of a nonstick pan. There is nothing Continue reading The Equalizer 2 (2018) Movie Review

2018 Academy Awards Predictions – Best Actor

Best Actor at the 2018 Academy Awards is looking to be one of the more…obvious categories. This and Best Actress are going to be some of the easier categories to call, at least in terms of who is the determined front-runner going into the ceremony.

That said, upsets are what make these award shows fun, right? That  and, you know, the possibility that someone is going to screw something up while on-stage.

2018 Academy Awards Predictions – Best Actor Nominees

2018. Oscars. Best Actor. We’re all thinking the same thing: Will the Academy give James Franco the award just to see what happens when he brings Tommy Wiseau on stage?

2018 Golden Globes Predictions – Best Actor

The two Best Actor categories this year both have good narratives to them. They are arguably the most exciting, as it is difficult to see exactly who is on top.

Roman J. Israel, Esq. (2017) Movie Review

It wouldn’t be surprising if you only know of the film Roman J. Israel, Esq. because the poster features the back of Denzel Washington’s head. It’s understandable. It’s not as if the name is particularly catchy. But Roman J. Israel, Esq. is the second directorial feature from Dan Gilroy, the man behind Nightcrawler and the scripts of such films as The Fall and Bourne Legacy.

For someone who appreciated Nightcrawler, it is not unreasonable to anticipate good things from Gilroy’s follow up. Don’t be fooled. Roman J. Israel, Esq.—and I only keep reiterating the name because we are reminded of it time and time again in the film—is not Continue reading Roman J. Israel, Esq. (2017) Movie Review

Irresponsibly Early Oscars 2018 Predictions: Best Actor

None of these movies have been released (except for Get Out). Most of these movies don’t even have trailers released. But we’re talking about them anyway.

Hurrah, hearsay!

Academy Awards Predictions 2017 – Best Actor

In some respects, 2017 is a very boring year for Oscar predictions. This also means that many of the categories are downright pieces of cake to narrow down. What’s good for the Oscar ballot is not as good for the press, I guess.

In Best Actor, we have a handful of great performances, but there is only one that has been the favorite from the very start.

2017 Academy Awards Nomination Predictions – Best Director

I like how the 2017 Best Director Oscar race is shaping up. It is quite interesting in terms of which directors have been getting attention thus far. There are some surprises, I think, which leaves the Oscar race more open than it initially seemed to be.

Fences (2016) Movie Review

Fences is an adaptation from the stage written by August Wilson (the playwright) and directed by/starring Denzel Washington (the star on stage). It is the stage talent taking the play and directly adapting the source material to the screen. And it feels like it takes place on a stage.
