Weekend Box Office Predictions: 4/14 – 4/16

Mid-April is not heavy with high profile releases. Next weekend sees the saturation of four wide releases, including Disney’s nature doc Born in China, A24’s action comedy Free Fire, and the Rosario Dawson-starring thriller Unforgettable.

This weekend, however, we see only one major release, and it could be a doozy. The Fate of the Furious. Furious 7, the franchise’s previous installment, made over a billion dollars worldwide and an opening weekend gross of $147 million domestic.

Will The Fate of the Furious live up to those numbers?

Weekend Box Office Predictions: 3/31-4/2

March is coming to an end, and it is has been a healthy month at the box office. Beauty and the Beast has continued to dominate over its first two weeks and is looking to add to its domestic gross.

Two new releases take aim at the Disney giant: Fox’s Boss Baby and Paramount’s Ghost in the Shell. Both are opening in over 3,000 theaters. But can either of them contend with the Beast?

Weekend Box Office Predictions: 3/24-3/26

Last weekend saw the record-breaking opening of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, which raked in a phenomenal $174 million. The film broke the record for best March opening weekend and the best opening for a PG-rated film, beating out last year’s Finding Dory by almost $40 million.

Beast‘s lack of competition guaranteed it this large opening. This weekend, we see the release of four wide release films, according to Box Office Mojo. The biggest of these four is Saban and Lionsgate’s Power Rangers, which has received a sizable marketing campaign to rival Disney’s.

Other releases include the sports pic Slamma Jamma, the comedy ChiPs, and the space thriller Life, all three of which are opening in less theaters than Power Rangers and Beauty and the Beast.

With the large quantity of competition, how far will Beauty and the Beast drop?

Weekend Box Office Predictions: 2/24-2/26

Oscar weekend sees the wide release of three new films. Two of these three, as far as I am concerned, have received zero marketing. These would be the films Rock Dog (um…) and Collide (…what?). The third film, also the widest new release of the weekend, is Jordan Peele’s much anticipated and well-reviewed Get Out. The horror film stars Daniel Kaluuya and Allison Williams and is likely to make a splash this weekend.

Returning to the fight are LEGO Batman, Fifty Shades Darker, and The Great Wall. The LEGO Batman Movie, having won the box office in its first two weekends, is likely to remain somewhere in the top three, although anything could happen.

Three high-profile releases are on the horizon for this upcoming weekend: Warner Bros.’ The LEGO Batman Movie, Universal’s Fifty Shades Darker, and Lionsgate’s John Wick 2. These three movies all open on a pre-Valentine’s Day weekend with a lot of box office potential.

With the January reign of M. Night Shayamalan’s Split coming to a close (the film pulled in $14.4 million last weekend, still a #1 finish), these three films are vying to take its place.

With Rings, last weekend’s number two finisher, being a disappointment, it is not hard to see it Continue reading Weekend Box Office Predictions: 2/10-2/12

Weekend Box Office Predictions: 6/24 – 6/26

This weekend has a slew of new movies being released. Independence Day: Resurgence is looking to be a box office smash as its predecessor once was, although the numbers will likely be far less stellar. The Blake Lively thriller The Shallows, too, is looking for a piece of the pie by also providing a throwback to a box office behemoth of old, Jaws.

June is about to get a facelift at the box office thanks to the major release of the new Pixar film Finding Dory. The multi-demo-hitting film will easily take number one this weekend, and it could best its predecessor financially given its positive reception.

Weekend Box Office Predictions: 6/10 – 6/12

This weekend sees three new wide release films to counter last week’s three wide release films that had varying degrees of success. Warcraft, The Conjuring 2, and Now You See Me 2 all look to duke it out for top five spots against the onslaught of Summer films that hang on from week to week.

Weekend Box Office Predictions: 6/3 – 6/5

The first weekend of June sees the release of three new wide releases, all in very differing genres. The comedy mockumentary headed by Andy Samberg, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is receiving favorable reviews. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, on the other hand, has far more tepid reviews. And the drama adaptation Me Before You is somewhere in-between.

As May comes to a close, we are well into the Summer movie season. However, aside from one particularly high profile release, we haven’t seen many large box office films raise to the surface. The Angry Birds Movie won the weekend last weekend, nudging out Civil War by about $5 million, but it was by no means a huge Summer release.
