Golden Globe nominations are out, and that can only mean one thing: extremely early predictions. We’re about a month out from the ceremony, so anything could happen between now and then. For now, though, let’s crack into these categories and see who will win, who could win, and who could come from behind and surprise everybody. Continue reading 2017 Golden Globe Awards Predictions

2017 Golden Globes Predictions – Best Screenplay
The five films nominated for Best Screenplay at the 2017 Golden Globes are all beautifully written pieces. Makes my job harder. But I think we can whittle this down to at least a three horse race, if not a head-to-head matchup.

2017 Golden Globe Predictions – Best Director
How do you judge the merits of a director? Is it the attention to visual compositions, or is that something you look for in a director of photography? Is it the quality of the acting performances, or does that rest on the cast’s shoulders? Is it the creation of a beautiful story, or is that the screenwriter’s business?
It’s the overall vision, whatever that means. Predicting Best Director sometimes feels like predicting Best Picture, and that is why the two awards often (but not always) go to the same film. So what do we do with an awards ceremony that honors two films and nominates five directors? Well, let’s see…

2017 Golden Globes Predictions – Best Supporting Actress
I like the Golden Globes Best Supporting Actress race. It is full of talent. It is full of competition. And there is no clear winner, per se. That said, let’s get to predicting!

2017 Golden Globes Predictions – Best Supporting Actor
Perhaps I am starting to sound like a broken record at this point in my predictions. But the Best Supporting Actor category isn’t even close. We have a two horse race with an unlikely chance of an upset.

2017 Golden Globe Awards Predictions – Best Picture
The Golden Globes’ biggest honor is actually a split honor. For better or worse, the awards show divides its Best Picture race into two categories: one signifying the highest achievement in “Drama,” and the other in “Musical or Comedy”
This year, both races are fairly cut and dry with some wiggle room for an upset.
Best Motion Picture – Drama

Moonlight (2016) Movie Review
Moonlight begins with a beautiful steadicam shot that literally revolves around a denied drug deal. One of the dealers involved, Juan (Mahershala Ali), gets cut off by a child being chased by bullies. Chiron, or “Little” (Alex Hibbert), finds comfort in Juan as a father figure that he does not have elsewhere in his life.
Little, quiet though he is, shows a conflicted desire to fit into the Continue reading Moonlight (2016) Movie Review
2017 Oscar Movie Season Preview
The first weekend of September 2016 has brought us two major disappointments (The Disappointments Room and When the Bough Breaks) and one movie with some early Oscar buzz. Clint Eastwood’s biopic Sully is earning attention, particularly for Tom Hanks’ usual strong performance. With Summer behind us and the mediocre lot of September ahead, I feel the need to look a few months down the line at some movies that promise to be some of the best of the year.
Oscar-nominated movies can come around at any time during the calendar year. We will more than likely see Continue reading 2017 Oscar Movie Season Preview
