2018 Academy Awards Predictions – Best Animated Feature

Whelp, it’s time to pat myself on the back for getting these five nominees correct—including the long shot The Boss Baby—in my previous article.

That was fun. Now let’s move back to the present. That these are the five that ended up getting the nod actually makes this job a bit easier, so let’s get into it.

2018 Academy Awards Predictions – Best Original Song

Sometimes, the nominees for Best Original Song come from unexpected places. This time around, not so much. The Marshall nod was a bit out of left field but certainly nothing unforeseeable.

The winner for Best Original Song, though, often comes from the most popular film of the bunch. This is to say, whichever film was most widely seen or whichever had the most widely-heard song or whichever has the highest Oscar stock. This, or the film is a popular musical, in which case it often wins by default.

This year, the nominees include a (somewhat) popular musical, a widely seen animated film, and a film with a relatively high Oscar stock. So…who wins?

2018 Academy Awards Predictions – Best Original Song Nominees

I’m no music critic. The Academy branch that determines the Best Original Song nominees probably don’t think about film the way I do. They could reach out and pull out a song from a film I’ve never heard of, because they’re only listening to the songs regardless of quality of movie.

Still, I’ve put it on myself to roll out predictions. You can’t expect them all to come from my mouth.

2018 Academy Awards Predictions – Best Animated Film Nominees

The Academy generally does a good job of reserving at least one spot in their Best Animated Feature category for an international picture. This year, there is potential for a number of international films to break the top five. However, there are also a lot of Hollywood pictures that the Academy may want to boast.

Yes this category has its obligatory Pixar nominee. But what of the other four slots? I’ll tell you this much: there are many movies to pick from.

2018 Golden Globes Predictions – Best Original Song

Three animated films, a showbiz musical, and an Americana period piece. Five songs. One Best Original Song category. Numbers, numbers. Yadda, yadda. Let’s talk about it.

2018 Golden Globes Predictions – Best Animated Feature

When it comes to predicting the winners at the 2018 Golden Globes, Best Motion Picture – Animated is the easiest place to start. Even with a film like The LEGO Batman Movie snubbed for the likes of The Boss Baby and Ferdinand, the category is the most clear-cut and predictable of the lot.

That is…if you believe Pixar is an insurmountable force.

Coco (2017) Movie Review

Pixar films often run on a formula of a handful of sure-fire tropes. A protagonist with dreams bigger than the present situation, prevented from acting on those dreams by external forces. A sidekick character who either doesn’t talk or has way too much to say. A supporting character who turns out to be evil at the third act break. The hero’s journey, all in pursuit of a theme that revolves around family and/or finding oneself.
