Phantom Thread (2017) Movie Review

Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) is a famed couture designer in post-war London. He is quite idiosyncratic, very particular. He has eyes for a waitress named Alma (Vicky Krieps), whom he places in his house and sizes her up for a dress.

This scene, where Day-Lewis’ Woodcock measures Alma, is the beginning of an intensely fraught yet surprisingly understated romantic relationship. And it is a Continue reading Phantom Thread (2017) Movie Review

2018 Academy Awards Predictions – Best Costume Design Nominees

Costume design is perhaps the most visually present thing to judge when it comes to film awards. It can be difficult to determine what films deserve to be nominated for an award like Best Editing. But costumes? Extravagant and showy and you’re in, right?

Not necessarily. Extravagance is certainly a variable, but costumes vary wildly from film to film and from genre to genre. A film like Beauty and the Beast is going for flashiness, where a film like The Shape of Water is going for period authenticity or a film like Blade Runner 2049 is going for a science-fiction sleekness.

2018 Golden Globes Predictions – Best Original Score

There are a few factors that go into the choice of Best Original Score: name recognition, a score’s importance to a film, the prominence of the score over other sonic elements, the overall success of the film itself, etc.

In the case of the 2018 crop of Golden Globe nominees, these factors don’t really narrow anything down. But it’s still worth a try!

Irresponsibly Early Oscars 2018 Predictions: Best Actor

None of these movies have been released (except for Get Out). Most of these movies don’t even have trailers released. But we’re talking about them anyway.

Hurrah, hearsay!

Irresponsibly Early Oscars 2018 Predictions: Best Picture

It’s Christmas in July! That’s right, it’s time to talk about the Oscars. Wait, I hear you begin to gripe, the 2017 Oscars were mere months ago! How could you possibly be predicting the 2018 Best Picture nominees already?

And you’re right. I can’t. I’ll probably delete all of these Irresponsibly Early Oscar prediction articles by next January once my findings have been proved astoundingly wrong.

Until then, let’s talk about movies that, for the most part, no one has seen yet and discuss them in ways that give them unwarranted hype and grossly premature acclaim.
