2018 Academy Awards Predictions – Best Cinematography Nominees

There are plenty of well-shot movies that come out every year. 2017 was no different, which makes narrowing down just five movies for Best Cinematography an arduous task. But I’m going to do it anyway!

2018 Academy Awards Predictions – Best Foreign Language Film Nominees

What makes predicting the Best Foreign Language category easy is that much of the work has already been done for me! The category has already been narrowed down to just nine films, of which there are already clear favorites.

That said, there is still upset potential. In the Fade just won the Golden Globe, after all, to the surprise of even the winners themselves.

2018 Academy Awards Predictions – Best Animated Film Nominees

The Academy generally does a good job of reserving at least one spot in their Best Animated Feature category for an international picture. This year, there is potential for a number of international films to break the top five. However, there are also a lot of Hollywood pictures that the Academy may want to boast.

Yes this category has its obligatory Pixar nominee. But what of the other four slots? I’ll tell you this much: there are many movies to pick from.

2018 Academy Awards Predictions – Best Adapted Screenplay Nominees

Unlike the Best Original Screenplay contenders, the 2018 Best Adapted Screenplay crop runs thin. There are five slots to fill, and the number of sure-things is only about three deep. This leaves a couple of contested spots that could seemingly be filled by any number of movies.

2018 Academy Awards Predictions – Best Original Screenplay Nominees

Having the screenplay category split in two generally makes predicting the nominees and winners fairly easy. At this stage in the 2018 awards season, though, there are plenty of outliers who could sneak into the mix. Even scripts that seem like obvious choices could become victim to an upset.

2018 Academy Awards Predictions – Best Actress Nominees

The crop of contenders for Best Actress this year is fantastic. There won’t be a wasted slot; no matter who gets into the top five, they will have earned their place. All the same, there can only be five!

2018 Academy Awards Predictions – Best Director Nominees

People were surprised when Greta Gerwig and Jordan Peele were snubbed for the Golden Globes crop of directors. Will they get into the Academy nominations? Is there a scenario in which Spielberg doesn’t get in? Will Guillermo Del Toro win…well that’s an article for another day.

Let’s talk about it!

2018 Golden Globes Predictions – Best Picture

It is obligatory to acknowledge the continual absurdity of the Golden Globe taxonomy vis a vis what constitutes a “Drama” and what constitutes a “Musical or Comedy,” but I don’t want to dwell on the point. It is getting exhausting.

If Get Out and Lady Bird are comedies, so is Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Why bother separating the two categories at all? Yeah, it gives comedies a chance to compete, because the dramas often nudge out the comedies. But most other awards outlets have expanded beyond five nominees. Why wouldn’t the Golden Globes just go to one category of 10 films? Who knows!

Whatever. Let’s talk about movies, I guess…

2018 Golden Globes Predictions – Best Actor

The two Best Actor categories this year both have good narratives to them. They are arguably the most exciting, as it is difficult to see exactly who is on top.
