Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018) Movie Review

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is both what you expect it to be and not at all what you might want it to be.

For one: if you have a soft spot for the silver screen Mamma Mia!, don’t expect a whole lot from the original cast. One hall of fame actress, in particular, is in noticeably short supply. And don’t go into this thinking, based on the trailer, that Cher comes in to fill the void.

I joke, because there isn’t Continue reading Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018) Movie Review

2018 Academy Awards Predictions – Best Actress

Best Actress has what is perhaps the widest gap between the front-runner and the other contenders. I mean, France McDormand is cleaning up from award show to award show. It is difficult to see anyone else taking that Oscar.

But, you know, I have to keep all other options on the table. Otherwise, there wouldn’t be an article to write.

The Post (2017) Movie Review

One could look at The Post, the latest from veteran director Steven Spielberg, and see a current and scathing indictment of executive authority to undermine freedom of speech vis a vis journalism, a critique of modern political decorum by way of an examination of the past.

Academy Awards Predictions 2017 – Best Actress

Perhaps the hardest category to call this early out, Best Actress will be one of the most exciting awards of the night at the 2017 Oscars. From this reviewer’s perspective, it is a hearty three-horse race. However, a recent video from the folks at GoldDerby featured a debate over the category and who could win. They suspect the field is more wide open than even that.

In New York, 1944, a wealthy socialite named Florence Foster Jenkins (Meryl Streep) takes a fancy to opera singing. With her husband’s (Hugh Grant) aid, she reunites with an old vocal coach (David Haig) and hires a young pianist (Simon Helberg). To the pianist’s dismay, his first rehearsal with Florence  yields the revelation of her sheer inability to carry a tune.
