2020 Oscar Predictions – Best Actress

Often times, the acting races at the Academy Awards are fairly cut and dry. By the time we get to the Oscar ceremony, it is usually pretty clear which actor is the frontrunner. A lot of this certainty lies in the Screen Actors Guild awards, whose winners often go on to win the Oscar. This is because the acting branch of the Academy is the largest, and the overlap between those voters and the SAG voters is enough to see a general pattern of voting.

This is not to say that upsets are impossible. An upset happened as recent as last year in this very category. So let’s look at who could possibly unseat the frontrunner this year.

2018 Academy Awards Predictions – Best Actress

Best Actress has what is perhaps the widest gap between the front-runner and the other contenders. I mean, France McDormand is cleaning up from award show to award show. It is difficult to see anyone else taking that Oscar.

But, you know, I have to keep all other options on the table. Otherwise, there wouldn’t be an article to write.

2018 Academy Awards Predictions – Best Actress Nominees

The crop of contenders for Best Actress this year is fantastic. There won’t be a wasted slot; no matter who gets into the top five, they will have earned their place. All the same, there can only be five!

Loving Vincent (2017) Movie Review

The novelty of the animated film Loving Vincent is well-known at this point. Over a hundred artists were tasked with replicating Vincent van Gogh’s works as a backdrop for a rotoscoped story exploring van Gogh’s mental health in his final days.

The animation in the film is at first transfixing. The world that is created with the textures and brush strokes is Continue reading Loving Vincent (2017) Movie Review

2018 Golden Globes Predictions – Best Actress

The crop of actresses in the two Best Actress Golden Globe categories is strong this year. Each category has its front-runners, but there is plenty of upset potential. Then again, I guess that’s how it always goes…

Whelp, let’s talk about it.

Lady Bird (2017) Movie Review

The teenage bildungsroman is a common narrative formula. Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig’s directing debut (she also serves as screenwriter), may be another addition to the list, but it does not feel like another tired addition. If anything, it exists in this long line of coming of age films as as much of a standout as the film’s eponymous role: a personality so bold and big but also honest that it demands to be taken on its own merits.

This is undoubtedly caused by Gerwig’s distinct presence. Even as a first-time director, it is clear that this is uniquely Continue reading Lady Bird (2017) Movie Review

2016 Academy Awards Predictions – Best Actress

I’ll start this prediction article with my personal bias. I loved Brie Larson in Room, although I never saw her as a frontrunner for the Golden Globe. As such, I was pleasantly surprised to see her take home the award, and it has given me new hope that she could win the Oscar.

Larson still faces tough competition, however. Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Lawrence (both Academy favorites) could easily Continue reading 2016 Academy Awards Predictions – Best Actress

Snubs From the 2016 Golden Globes Nominations

The Golden Globes suffer from something that the Academy Awards recently remedied quiet easily. The format of the Golden Globes is to have two separate categories for Best Picture, one for drama and one for comedy or musical. The Academy Awards, by comparison, have Continue reading Snubs From the 2016 Golden Globes Nominations

Brooklyn (2015) Movie Review

Brooklyn is a film starring Saoirse Ronan as a young Irish emigre, Eilis, who moves to New York in the early 1950s to find work, leaving behind a mother and sister as a result. In Brooklyn, she stays at a boarding house with four other women of differing personality, works at a department store (but takes night classes to become a bookkeeper), and falls for a young Italian man named Tony (Emory Cohen).
